Photoluminescent Performance
Safe Glow™ products work by absorbing ambient light and storing that light like a battery. When lighting is removed, these products work immediately and continue to glow for more than 12 hours.
Safe Glow™ Products:
• Do not require electricity, wiring or batteries
• Charge using existing ambient light
• Are not radioactive
• Have a projected life span greater then 20 years
• Require little maintenance
Code Compliance vs. Life Safety Effectiveness
Building codes are established to ensure a minimum level of performance. Most competitors manufacture their products to meet code. We believe that life safety products deserve more. That is why Safe Glow™ strives to provide the highest performing lighting, signs and markers to ensure top photoluminescent performance when lives hang in the balance. Yes, our products exceed the building codes in most areas*, but they will impress you most with how they perform when emergencies arise.
*Safe Glow™ products have not been tested to meet MEA compliance in New York City.

Establishing Light Measurement Benchmarks
When installing your Safe Glow products, it is important to measure ambient light when and where your products are installed, and test the products for effective performance. These measurements can then be referred to in the future to ensure that light levels are the same as when installed. A light meter that measures in foot candles should be used to establish these benchmarks. If ambient light levels change, testing the products by creating test blackout situations is suggested. In all situations, after installation, products should be tested to ensure your system is functioning properly. Test when your products are fully discharged, or at their lowest level (possibly early Monday morning). Turn lights on for thirty minutes before simulating a blackout condition to test performance. Ensure that your building is not occupied and/or notify everyone present of your test and the anticipated duration of your test. Test the products for one hour longer then it takes to evacuate your building safely.
Maintaining Light Levels
The biggest concern about available light for effective charging is keeping light fixture diffusers clean and keeping burned out bulbs replaced. A monthly visual inspection for burned out bulbs and dirt is suggested.
Cleaning Your Signs
If there is a visible amount of dust is on the face of the sign, it should be either dusted off or cleaned. Always use a mild cleaner with a micro-fiber towel, which will minimize scratching on the surface of the sign. Failure to follow these instructions may impair the performance of your Safe Glow™ products.
Ensuring Compliance with UL 924 Requirements
Exit signs have specific UL 924 requirements for effective charging. They must have 5 foot candles of fluorescent light on the face of the sign at all times of building occupancy. Quarterly checks should be done with a reliable light meter, capable of measuring in foot candles to ensure that sufficient lighting is available for effective operation.
